So for the past month and a half or so I've been working at Martin's, a national chain grocery store that bought out the local chain Ukrop's when the Ukrops got too old to continue owning and running the stores and their kids didn't want to be in the grocery business. I didn't go to college to make $8.50 an hour, but with the luck I've had getting work since graduating I was very glad to have the job. The work isn't bad, most of the customers aren't even too bad (shockingly), and my co-workers are great. Again, not ideal, and only part time, so that and the fairly low wage mean I couldn't move out of my parents' house, but that's life.
However! Just this Thursday I finally got an offer from Booz Allen Hamilton, a great-sounding consulting firm I've been in the hiring process with for a month or so! So I will be salaried, full time, and moving to D.C. in the next few weeks! I've put in my two weeks notice at Martin's, all my coworkers are not mad that I'm leaving and are really happy for me, even my manager, so that's really good. I start on the 27th, so I'll have about a week to move from Richmond to D.C. after I'm done at Martin's. I'm finally going to be living on my own, with a big-person job! I am incredibly excited, and scrambling to find a place to live. I haven't been drawing at all because of being depressed/busy, but I'm hoping that having a regular work schedule and a more positive outlook on life will mean I get more drawing done soon! I feel very, very lucky and fortunate to get this job. This last year has taught me a lot about being glad for what I have even if things aren't going exactly as I'd like, taught me a lot of humility what with living at home, and I think has made this success all the sweeter.

|I'm an enumerator, which sounds more badass than it is.
Haven't been doing any comics lately. I've got one partially pencilled, but just can bring myself to finish it for some reason, although part of it is that I've been working lately!
I'm working for the census, going door to door for houses that didn't return their census questionnaire and getting their data. Thus far, basically everyone I've encountered has been in the neutral to nice range, with some people being very nice and very helpful. I've encountered a few resistant people, but even they haven't really yelled at me, just been like "no thank you" and closed the door in my face. One guy said he thought it was "all bullshit," that's about as bad as it's been, and he even said "I don't mean to be disagreeable but I think it's all bullshit anyway." A nice thing about the South is that even when people aren't cooperative they're still typically pretty polite about it. I can't understand why people don't want to answer it, since the information is so basic I bet I could find out all of it online it about ten minutes if I was allowed.
The thing that seems to bother people the most is providing their phone number, even though I explain that it's only for quality assurance and they randomly call our respondents to make sure we enumerators aren't making stuff up. Plus, most of them are probably in the phone book. I just want to be like, I can go online and view satellite images of your house! I can see streetviews of your house! You have a driver's license, so "the government" already has this much information and then some. Give me the number, please please! I can't turn this in without a number. I've got a badge and an official dorky messenger bag, a babyface, and if I divulge any of this information I could go to jail for six years and get a $250,000 fine. You can trust me, for really reals.
Anyway, will hopefully do a comic in the next couple days. I've started going to the gym, which has given me a bit more energy. On the other hand, I can now afford to go out and be social, and staying home for money reasons made me get a lot of comics shit done.
Also!! I interviewed to teach cartooning and comics classes for kids in Raleigh, they said my stuff was "awesome" and it was the best interview of my life! Some of the timing could be hard to work out, but if I got the job and all that worked out I would be incredibly, incredibly happy. That would be like my dream job.

Well I took a week off to figure out what I wanted to do with comics. It was mostly unproductive, but I did realize that I should switch back to a 3x a week schedule. 5 days a week was really stressing me out, and it's hard to come up with that many good ideas that often, so I wound up doing work I that disappointed me. So that was a useful realization! I still need to come up with a name for the series and start making a website so I can market it, but at least I got some good out of the break, and it's really nice to be drawing comics again.

|Catching up (again)
Man I am laaaaaaaame. Maybe I should start sketching more, post those on here to get some LJ-only content. I need to draw more just for fun anyway, drawing just for comics meant to act as professional representations is a little high-pressure. I should draw 'cause i want to!
Anyway, big ol' buncha comics under the cut!( Read more...Collapse )
PS I wound up not being offered the job I was freaking out about in my last post, which was actually kind of nice in a way.

|Catch up post/whining about decisions
God I need to stop neglecting the LJ. I check my friends page many times a day, so why can I never remember to crosspost these from my website? Been enjoying working in the fictional(or semiautobiographical) range with this new strip. I still haven't come up with a name for the strip or names for two of the four main characters yet, haha. Whoooooooops! Remember my website if you're ever inexplicably missing my comics: www.thesemireal.com !
K, here are bunches of comics (nine), plus some musings about my employment situation and future in comics. I know that's not super exciting, but I'm trying to get my thoughts out as much as possible to try to make the best decisions I can.( Read more...Collapse )

|Couple more strips
More of my new fiction-style comic under the cut! Due to problems with art supplies, money, and being super bummed, I did have a huge gap there. But two comics are under the cut!( Read more...Collapse )

|New Strip I developed
Tons of stuff under the cut. This is a new strip that I might do as my main deal from now on, although I haven't been doing any comics for a little bit. I think I'm maybe getting depressed again. Ah well! Sorry for neglecting the LJ. Again. This strip is making the quantum leap from autobiographical to semiautobiographical, haha.( Read more...Collapse )

Man. I always get annoyed when the people I follow here on LJ don't post as much as I'd like (and thereby not entertaining me! insufferable!), and then I realize that I haven't posted in forever. So here's three comics, and some lj-only sketches of some characters I'm developing in the hopes of making comics that can actually be successful! All that jazz and maybe more (probs not) after the cut.( Read more...Collapse )

Daaaang but I been neglecting crossposting to this here El-Jay. Remember that if for some reason you're bored out of your mind and want to read a comic of mine and it's been a while since one has shown up on here, I'm much better about updating my website.
Here's two comics that I've neglected to post, and after midnight I'll post the latest comic after midnight, once it's live on my website.( Read more...Collapse )
